One comment that I find odd is the one regarding the high cost of going direct-to-DVD... I'm certainly not in the production biz, but that sounds completely "off." Have you BEEN to a Blockbuster lately? The "new releases" shelves are FULL of direct-to-DVD crap horror flicks that I'm sure are there because it's so cheap to get 'em there.

Kane, I loved that original series. For a while a new film was being talked of, a complete big budget remake. However that never got off the ground either.
The thing is it's a superb story and could really work again. However what does that matter. There's not a visible cult following so the dollar signs aren't out, and it's probably not cheap to get hold of the rights. For Hollywood that means the two main boxes are out the window.
Never mind, we'll see things like Joust and Magnum P.I. first...sigh.
And "Joust"... sigh.

In the mini-series the humans send a distress call to an enemy of the reptilians knowing it would take years to reach them, and also not knowing anything about them. I'd like to see the implications of that.
With that in mind, though, I can totally see how NBC wanted a remake of the first bit before going ahead with a sequel. It could get confusing for fans that DID enjoy The Final Battle and - god forbid - the series.
I loved the series when I was a kid, and I recently purchased the DVD´s, but I dont remember that part.
That said, I have never understood why so many people believe Independence Day was cribbed from V, aside from the images of giant flying saucers moving in over familiar cities. ID is almost beat-for-beat a remake of the 1953 version of War of the Worlds, right down to the ineffective atomic bomb attack and a "virus" bringing down the aliens, with the final trench run over the Death Star thrown in for good measure.
I'm beginning to wonder if the stars are aligning for this thing to actually happen!
I guess if the suits are just sitting on it, it only takes a bit of fan noise to give them the motivation to move forward.
Here's hoping, anyway!
