Screen Rant testing: Rejected Iron Man Movie Armor Concepts

  • alfredo · 3 years ago
Those look okay but they should use the current design in the Ultimate Marvel titile.
  • Vic · 3 years ago
Ack... I hope not. The Ultimate version is too "Robotech/anime" for my taste.

    Vic
  • Thomas · 3 years ago
It looks very nice. The big chin thing on the mask is a little weird but these would've been just drafts I imagine.

Fingers crossed about the actual design.
  • Boba Fett · 3 years ago
    Those aren't real,
A guy made them and posted them on Superherohype.com a while back
  • Venom · 3 years ago
^^^ Yeah i think thats true,
Adi Granov is doing the concept work and final design for the armor, not who ever that dude is
  • Vic · 3 years ago
    Guys,

Did you even bother to READ the post? Those were designs that were created by someone in the CGI field who had a sit down meeting with the VFX supervisor of the Iron Man movie in an attempt to get on board the film.

The designs WERE presented to John Nelson and the comments above reflect what took place during the meeting.

    Vic
  • Boba Fett · 3 years ago
No I never read the posts.... waist of time....
  • Vic · 3 years ago
    Yeah, ok... whatever.

    Vic
  • Jay · 3 years ago
    Thank you Vic,

Im glad I'm not the only person who actually read the post.

By the way, Adi Granov is not the ONLY designer working on this movie.
  • Kev · 3 years ago
It's close. It's got me excited. The helmet and the face need the most work, as well as the colors (more chrome, less black IMO), but it's slim, it's sleek, and it invokes the comics. If the real armor looks anything like this, I'm excited. :D
  • Duncan · 3 years ago
These are complete CRAP, RUBBISH, CHEESY!!!

Looks like something from a cheap kids tv show...

Go back to the old comics - REMEMBER, his name is IRON man... thats IRON man, not 'Cheap-Looking-Smooth-Moulded-Plastic-Man!!!

When you see him you need to think IRON. Big, heavy, solid, well used, scared, rusting just a little. This suit makes me think lightweight, shiny, polished, vain, complicated (not in a psychological way, just in a 'bad design' way).

Its pretty simple - thats the point. Get rid of the complex muscle look. make it look like Iron, not muscle - whats the point of calling him Ironman if he looks like a Gym-freak?

BTW, i'm not a fanatic, or comic reader, i guess i remember drawing him as a kid, along with all the other comics. I'm your average movie goer who loves the cinema. But i wouldn't go see Ironman if he looked like this plastic twat. For a point of reference i love the Spiderman movies (always been a Raimi fan), but i thought the Green Goblin suit was almost as bad as the one you've got here, whereas Doc Octopus was excellent.

Good luck folks, at this rate you'll need it!

  • clnky · 3 years ago
those designs look clunky - just like robocop

    luckily they were dumped

frankly they shhould use an anime manga design
  • Duncan · 3 years ago
He looks like a cross between a mobile phone and a hair dryer
  • Jay · 3 years ago
#1: Ironman should never be "rusting just a little". Thats crazy. Ironman does not rust. Period.

#2: The Green Goblin suit was 1000 times worse that this design.

#3: I agree. This design is still crap and thank God it was rejected because it does look like a "plastic twat". (excellent description)

Jon Favreau directed Elf with Will Ferrell and Zathura.

So I guess we have "seen him director a movie yet".

Wow. I guess grammar doesnt mean what it used to.

    Those ar MUCH better.

    I like those a lot

*Song plays* "We are power rangers! We are...." Wait...you mean to tell me I'm not watching Power Rangers and these are actually pictures of Iron Man's design for a film?
  • Majorita · 3 years ago
Looks more like "Shiny Plastic Slightly Rubber Man" rather than Iron Man.
  • Alfredo · 3 years ago
It'll never happen but I think they should use this as a basis for the Iron Man movie.

You guys sound like the same punks who were knocking the LOTR fimls before they were made.

Open your mouth and swallow your foot.

    And choke.

    Please.
  • Duncan · 3 years ago
Well i was a Pete Jackson fan back with 'Bad Taste' and knew his 'Rings' would be sweet, so swallow your own mouth 'Punk' (who is this anyway, Dirty Harry?
And i still think this plastic twat power ranger is a piece of crap. whoever came up with the design should engage his brain (its I.R.O.N man, not plastic fantastic) or go back to making kiddie toys.
  • Vic · 3 years ago
"You guys sound like the same punks who were knocking the LOTR fimls before they were made.

Open your mouth and swallow your foot.

    And choke.

    Please."

First off: Bite me. If you're lucky I won't ban you from commenting on my site.

Second, no, I never doubted for a sec that LOTR would rock my world, and if you bothered to read some of my other Iron Man posts on this site you would see that I'm actually very jazzed and optimistic about this movie based on the fact that Favreau is directing and the comments he's made so far.

hmmm, so this is how the spawn of Jason the Red Ranger and Samus Aran from Metroid would look...
  • Texrat · 3 years ago
Top 2 look great IMO. Bottom 3 images look like Japanese anime rejects. Blech.

I'm pretty sure that the final version is going to be MUCH closer to the top two than to the bottom images. 8)

    Vic
  • Ashes · 3 years ago
Hmmm...I find it kind of doubtful he had a meeting with John Nelson. Maybe at a Comicon type event where he shoved some image in Nelson's face and I guess he could then say Nelson rejected them. Based on what I saw at his website he's not a level where Nelson would meet with him. I'd love to find out when and where this "meeting" took place and then ask John where he was.
  • Vic · 3 years ago
    Ashes,

He did in fact have a meeting. He actually met Favreau FIRST. Here is his response to my inquiry concerning your comment:

"When I saw Favreau at the 'Con, I showed him the renderings on my laptop. He gave me a quick look and said he thought they were impressive, but a different direction than he was going. He gave me the number of the VFX supervisor John Nelson, as he didnt want to deal with CG issues. I called John Nelson, mentioned what I have, and told him my experience as a professional CG artist. Since I have been at Digital Domain, Jim Henson Creature Shop and Disney, he was willing to give me some time to see my stuff. But it wasnt going to be a official meeting (as with Favreau and other production staff) and he was curious to what I had. He and his VFX producer saw my stuff on my laptop , and he liked what he saw. He wanted me to continue for a week , but he was going to talk to the Legal Dept about bringing me in as I wasnt solicited by Marvel."

"Later in the day the VFX producer called me up telling me as I am not solicited by marvel, they cant use me. Im guessing its either they call you, and you dont call them, or someone there didnt like me."

    So there ya go.

  • Max · 3 years ago
First of all, my statement will be biased. I'm a comic freak( though not of the breed who spend hours lounging on their fat asses, fantasizing about flying around in skin tight leotards; I use my fat ass for other things), who has from the beggining loved Iron Man and most subsequent versions of him. So, I'd personally attempt to keep the movie as true to the comics as possible (props to Pete Jackson for doing that with LOTR).
Second, realize that Iron Man is a character in a fictional magazine, so normal engineering and physical limitations have no bearing( I assume that most of the people on here know this, so I won't elaborate).
    Now, down to business.
The pictures cited above are the most disgusting, atrocious, projectal vomit inducing renderings of an Iron Man prototype, that I have ever seen.
Especially the ones on the bottom.
I'd have to agree with "Duncan", in that the look should be more steely. Though, I wouldn't go so far as to say that it should be the walking monstrocity that it was in the early 60's.
A little closer to War Machine than traditional Iron Man.
Clean, straight lines, greys, blacks and silvers, minimal flashiness.
    Some is warranted.
How else will they sell merchandise?
Anyway, the point is, Iron Man shouldn't be a demon-smashing manga toon. But even that doesn't really matter.
Old Shell-Head will soldier on even if his movie is an unrealistic flop.

what a jackass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! why dont you go back to Canada ehhhh?!?!!? leave these nice people alone>:( yeah im talking to you martini:evil:  word.
  • Vic · 3 years ago
    Hey Max,

Don't hold back... tell us how you REALLY feel.

That was pretty harsh criticism from a self-admitted fat comic freak, don't you think?

Brandon is a friend of mine and (with the exception of the helmet, which I don't like) I think he did a heck of a job thinking outside the box and trying to come up with a more real world tech version of the armor.

So until you produce some kick-ass photorealistic CGI Iron Man renderings, perhaps you could tone down the rhetoric, eh? 8)

    Vic
  • ------- · 3 years ago
hello, I'm currently working for a studio doing pre-production for ironman, and I've been working with the computer model of the armor. While I can't show or discuss much, I can assure you that you don't need to be worried about the look and your fears of some far off style isn't going to happen.
  • Vic · 3 years ago
I have it on good authority that the armor design will be VERY close to the version in the poster that was released for the film.

    Vic
  • Leviathan · 3 years ago
    Aaaah, you misunderstood my comment.
I was not criticizing his work. On the contrary, I could never hope to produce anything even approaching that calibur.
What I was disgusted with was the concept. The design.
So, if I have offended, I apologize.
    But please, don't misconstrue.
  • Vic · 3 years ago
No worries. It's good of you to come back and clarify and it's appreciated. :D

  • MOJOKID · 3 years ago
HEY, YOU GUYS EVER HEAR " NO SCHOOL LIKE THE OLD SCHOOL" ? WHAT'S WRONG WITH STARTING OUT WITH AN EARLY DESIGN AND MOVING ON FROM THERE ? REMEMBER THE ARMOR WAS CONSTANTLY EVOLVING . I HOPE THE MOVIE IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR A SEQUEL
    :P
  • Jason · 3 years ago
I like that new armor design quite a bit. It's practical, looks like it would offer the fluidity needed to move and fight with, and from a design standpoint, attractive. Except for the helmet. I really like the muted colors, no one doing any fighting would color their armor the bright red and gold it is now. Some issues I do see are the vulnerabilities on vital areas of his torso, but those would have been worked out over the design process.

As a concept designer, I know this is one of the hardest things to do: re-imagine a character that has a huge fan base, and make it work for film. Props to him for having the balls to walk up to the director and say, "hey, look at my stuff, you might like it."

Now lets hope they actually build the suit and stay away from a totally CG character.
  • Skully · 2 years ago
The 70's-80's style should be followed closely. This is the identifiable Iron Man. He changed little in this era. Since then, there have been 101+ changes in the armor. Why?Because an artist feels it needs an "update". After a few months of complaints, it gets changed again.
The only time something needs to be made "fresh" is when it is stale. Not the case with Iron Man.
Iron Mans early versions were pretty futuristic even by todays standards. Any retooling will just repeat the "updated" Green Goblin movie version fiasco. Not every suit needs the transformers look. Todays CG would make the gold form fitting sleeves and leggings look awesome.
THIS is the REAL Iron Man http://www.diamondgalleries.com/product_images/1/4073/001_big.jpg
  • Vic · 2 years ago
Skully, I hear ya. That's the Shellhead I grew up with, but the problem is that today's audience is more (hack, cough) sophisticated and setting that level of ultra-high tech in today's time just wouldn't come across as "realistic".

Sure, we're using the terms superpowered characters an "realism" in the same sentence, but to suspend disbelief there have to be compromises made. Now if Iron Man was based in the 24th century, sure. But for now it's going to have to look a bit more feasible.

I've seen some concept designs and if they go with what I've seen I think it'll be a decent compromise.

    Vic
  • Skully · 2 years ago
I understand the need to accomodate a newer audiance... but lets not forget the FAILURES Marvel has had in the past when veering TOO far from what the fanbase expects to see. When Spiderman was in production, the black suit was still being used. Sticking with the old tried and true, made it look more like the comic (with exception of Green Goblin). Let's not forget it's a COMIC BOOK movie. It should not be an action flick "based on" a comic book. Anybody remember the old made-for-tv movies Marvel used to make? Spiderman had goggles? built into his mask? Captain America had a motorcycle, and helmet? And Doctor Strange.....don't get me started LOL.

I hope the movie is fairly faithful to the original story. The Hulk had awsesome CG, nailing Hulk, but the story was so bad, it alienated a lot of people who grew up with the comic and knew the story.
  • Vic · 2 years ago
I think the movie will be faithful to the CONCEPT of the original story, but actually quite different since they're doing it present-day. I think that the "Extremis" story arc by Warren Ellis and Adi Granov will be a big influence when it comes to look of the armor and origin.

    Vic
  • aka J · 2 years ago
Just wanted to say something quick. I think the concepts look good for being just that, concepts. Im sure the armor in the movie will be much closer to the style of armor he currently wears in the comic. In doing that they will connect the two properties rather than seperating them. And, to all the haters...really, do you seriously think that Robert Downey Jr's acting ability will allow this movie to flop? Come now children...

  • Ender · 2 years ago
Maybe, Maybe not. Who knows? the concepts are ok, but I hope they go with the original(not the full gold one). that would make alot of iron man fans happy.

I dissagree ender. i think thay shood go with the newer consepts. did you see the new poster adds they have up in gregs review on yahoo?
  • Ender · 2 years ago
Yes, I did see it, actually. Maybe you're right.
    somthing worth thinking about, anyway.
  • Vic · 2 years ago
Well they'll be starting with a "clunkier" version and then go to a more advanced one (matching the poster pretty closely) by the end of the film.

    Vic
  • AAB · 2 years ago
Some one completely unfamiliar with Ironman should be able to look at that armor and go, "THAT IS BAD ASS! I WANT THAT!!!"

None of the looks above say that to me.
Adi Granov's art for the first 5 issues of the current Ironman series is a cool reference. These examples above are too clunky and not 'exciting' looking.
  • Grave · 2 years ago
Guys these designs are not terrible. I agree they can be better, but making him look Iron like the original costume is redicilous. The new costume they are using in the Civil War comics are great it is lean, form fitting, and bad ass. So why are you all judging what the fil will be from the REJECTED armor?

  • Thomas · 2 years ago
I can't see this movie going anywhere.
Reminds me of a cross between Spawn and Batman 3.
It'll be a "comic book movie" alright. In the worse sense of the word.
It's almost like they took the DareDevil approach.
"Lets take some stars people recognize, a marginally inspired hero who isn't iconic in any way, and add big explosions... it'll be a hit!"

    no... no it won't.

Sadly, this movie is destined to join the ranks of Spawn and Hellboy.
A favorite among it's core fan base, but zero power to reach across movie goer lines to attract outsiders looking for a good movie to watch on a friday night.
  • Vic · 2 years ago
    Thomas,

You could turn out to be right, but I hope not. I hope you come back to comment after the movie has been released.

Yo, i'll say this... if u can't so much as draw a PENCIL rendering of tha designs here, don't speak ill. I'm a graphic designer myself (not CGI tho) but i know first hand tha time, effort and talent needed to render images, especially those that are computer generated. Also, given technological advances, and the tech that would be involved in the timeline of the movie, a "plastic" Iron Man may be appropriate. It's not entirely impossible to mold iron or steel into such shapes as those in the pictured designs these days anyway (although i'm sure it would exceed the movie's budget for the suit and use in stunts wouldn't be practical). It seems as though most of you rather enjoy being disappointed with these types of things... Nevermind. Please, continue your closed mindedness. It's healthy.

    ^_^
  • Ender · 2 years ago
I know i havent posted in a while, but i just watched the ironman animated movie, and i think they should go with the lava suit that he used to go into the volcano, that looks like the best choice, and it would be kinda stupid to show that in the animated and then change the concept, you guys agree?
  • Screen Rant · 2 years ago
No, I don't. The version they're using in the movie is VERY close to the current armor used in the comics.

    Vic
  • MsMia · 2 years ago
So I read also that Iron Man is making a new movie, sweet!! You know what's really cool is that we get to tease about this crazy politics stuff and madness in mediums such as tv shows, cartoons and comic books! I read on globalgrind.com today too that some artists are getting more political, not just 'Ye, in their videos and such. This is what I live for..awesomeness like that! America gets to have it's say in a humorous and light way, without (hopefully that is) getting hit with fed regs. Now that's no fun...

Great movie... Good start for the summer blockbusters. And for all you "make the suit anime-manga style" ninnies; I hope you all get locked in a Port-A-John and set ablaze. It's recycled nimrod ideas like those that destroy any hope for creativity in movies, utterly dashed to bits by cookie-cutter mentality
  • Ender · 1 year ago
WOW, I went to the premier (12:01 am, had to wait three hours, but it was worth it) and it was so awsome. alot better than I expected. I was kinda thinking it was gonna be kinda geeky, but no. everyone in the theatre wanted to be Iron Man when the movie was over (WOOHOO!) best movie of the year, I swear. (Go watch it NOW!!!)
they even fit Black Sabbath's Iron Man song in at the end. ^_^
  • FunkyM0nk · 1 year ago
I agree Ender. As for the Black Sabbath song, I was waiting the whole movie; wondering when they'd fit it in. I can't wait for the next to movies already (they signed a three picture deal).

    A THREE PICTURE DEAL!!!! ZOMG!!!!
Holy shat, I am DEFINITLY going to see all of them. Isn't one of them gonna be an Ultimate Avengers thing?
  • FunkyM0nk · 1 year ago
Of that, I'm unsure. I'm just very glad they made it so well. On the other hand, The Incredible Hulk with Edward Norton is coming out soon and I'm not sure how I feel about that. i know they purposefully left "Incredible" out of the first movie.
  • Ender · 1 year ago
Yes, they did a pretty good job. I hope the next two will be add up and be like the spider-man trilogy was.
On the Hulk side, I don't know WHAT to think.
The whole thing with switching actors almost ALWAYS has a downside. I just hope they know what they're doing.
